Arts bursary

The aim of the Arts Bursary, established in 2009, is a collaboration between The Office of Student Life and DCU Educational Trust, offers a limited number of Arts Bursaries to full time students involved in the Arts.

Each year, a number of DCU students benefit from the scheme.

 

What art forms are included? 

  • Visual Arts – (Painting, Photography, Sculpture, Illustration, Craft making, Fashion)
  • Performing Arts – (Dance, Music, Theatre; Music Technology)
  • Media Practice – (Writing, Video; Film)

Objectives of the Award

The Award is designed to promote excellence in artistic and cultural activities in Dublin City University, and to encourage the pursuit of such excellence. It aims to support individual professional artists at any stage of their career to develop their artistic practice.

Maximum bursary amount granted

€500 (typical bursary amounts are usually between €100 - €250)

Who may apply?

Any student who is currently studying in DCU.

How do I apply?

Students are asked to submit an application detailing their achievements to date, their hopes for the future development of their art form and some detail on how they propose to spend any bursary they may be awarded (see end of page for dates and application form).

What may I apply for?

Students may apply for a bursary to support any aspect of their artistic development including:

  • Pencils
  • paints
  • canvas
  • paintbrushes
  • paper
  • glue
  • modelling materials
  • studio desk
  • books 
  • lessons 
  • dance /musical equipment
  • lenses
  • lights
  • gimbals
  • any other materials deemed necessary for development.

*A note about laptops – the Arts Bursary does not support the purchase of laptops unless the applicant can show a significant justification in their artistic development for support towards the cost of purchase.

What may I not apply for?

  • Activities or costs that do not fit the purpose of the award
  • Proposals that do not have a creative objective
  • Activities or costs for existing business enterprises
  • Activities that do not form part of the development of a professional arts practice
  • Retrospective activities or completed projects
  • Activities that are already being supported by any other types of grants or bursaries

How will my application be assessed?

Students complete an application form and are then assessed on the following criteria:

  • Quality of the proposal
  • Sufficient evidential materials
  • Feasibility of the proposal

When will I hear if my application has been successful?

Potential bursary candidates will be invited to an interview within 5 weeks of submitting their application form.

The interviews will be conducted by a two-person panel and successful candidates will be notified via email within 2 weeks of interviews of the bursary amount they are being granted. If your application is not successful following interview, you will be notified via email within 2 weeks of interviews.

Unsuccessful candidates will be notified via email within 5 weeks of application closing date.

How do I claim my bursary?

Students will have until the end of the current academic year to spend their bursary. Receipts must be provided to arts.bursary@dcu.ie along with a completed Reimbursement Form.

Please note invoices, delivery dockets, order confirmation, etc. will not be accepted for reimbursement.

Once receipts and Reimbursement form have been provided, payment will be issued as soon as possible.
