What is a Class Rep and what do they do?
Class Representatives are elected by their class to represent their class every year. As a Class Rep, you represent your classmates, meet other reps and have a say in how the Students’ Union works for the students of DCU. As a rep, you are the key link between your class and the lecturers of your course, as well as between your class and the Union. You work for your class by fighting for their rights, by making sure their issues are addressed and that their DCU experience is the best one possible. Class Reps are vital to the running of the Union. Class Reps have three roles within their remit: an information provider, a partner and an expert. Class Reps also have the fun job of organising bonding activities, nights out and class hoodies!
Feedback is essential and it’s the job of a Class Rep to provide it to their class, lecturers and the SU. The most effective results of being a good Class Rep comes from collaboration between staff and students. Partnership between lecturers and reps across their course and faculty is vital to progression when issues arise. Class Reps have to attend two important meetings, Class Rep Council and Programme Board Meetings.
Class Rep Council (CRC) consists of all reps across the campus and the SU team. Here, the SU report on the work they’ve been doing and give reps a space to question them about what else they’re working on. Class Reps are encouraged to use this opportunity to discuss potential problems they’re facing and get advice from other reps. CRC is run by the Chair of CRC and is minuted by the Secretary who are both elected at CRC. CRC takes place four times a semester and an agenda, minutes of previous meetings and reports are circulated beforehand that reps must read and be ready to respond to.
