MENTAL HEALTH


You may find that you are struggling with your mental health throughout the year - everybody does from time to time. Fortunately, there are services available to help you through anything you need. From momentary stresses to larger issues, there is something there to help you out.


DCU Counselling Service

The DCU Counselling Service operates for the full year (including the summer) and is available for both online and in person sessions. The counselling services are free. Virtual counselling sessions take place through Google Hangouts.

Togetherall: The counselling services offer free, 24/7 access to Togetherall’s peer to peer mental heatlh support. This is a safe, online community where people support each other anonymously to improve mental health and wellbeing. Create an account with your DCU email here.

Free Mental Health Programmes: Over 10 free online programmes are available to you through SilverCloud/DCU Counselling. These cover general weelbeing and mental health concerns, eg. depression, resilience, social anxiety and insomnia. Register here with your DCU student email.

NiteLine: NiteLine is a crisis helpline that is run by and for students of universities in Dublin. They offer an anonymous and confidential phone service and instant messaging service every night from 9pm to 2:30am. Call 1800 793 793. More info here.


External Supports (Helplines)

HSE Helpline: The HSE runs an information helpline on mental health services. Freephone 1800 742 444.

Pieta House: 1890 303 302. This helpline is open seven days a week from 10am to 10pm.

LGBT Helpline: Localised helplines for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals can be found here.

50808 Text Service: Text ‘HELLO’ to 50808 to be connected with a trained volunteer to talk about any life stress you may be dealing with. This is not an emergency service. If you are experiencing suicide ideation and self-harm, please ring 999. More information available here.

Dublin Rape Crisis Centre: The DRCC runs a 24 hour helpline 7 days a week. Freephone 1800 77 88 88. 


External Supports (Counselling) 

Turn2me.org: Turn2me.org provides six free counselling sessions (email, chat, or virtual) to residents of the Republic of Ireland. 

MyMind.org: My Mind provides low-cost counselling to students at 20 euro per session. They are also running free counselling sessions for those who have been affected by COVID-19, including bereavement, depression, and if you are a front-line worker. More details here.

LGBT Friendly Counselling: LGBT-Friendly counsellors by region are detailed by Dublin Lesbian Line here. These services are available for any person to access.

Helping Friends: The HSE provides several online-based and in-person training couses on supporting a friend through mental health disress. You can find all available courses here.
